...what the hell does writing something in cursive have to do with taking the SAT? There was certainly nothing of the sort on it when I took it.

With a pen you have one point of writing. With a keyboard, each fingertip can create a letter. A good typist could type 140 words per minute. Good luck trying to write even 14 words in a minute with a pen. 10x productivity increase ftw. Messy pens FTL

lol well I don't know how recent it is. It has at least been done in the past 4 years, but you have to copy a statement and sign it. The instructions tell you to do it in cursive. Just by looking around, you wouldn't believe how many people struggled with that.
Anyway, back on topic. People say I have really nice writing, and I'm a college student so I still write to take notes. I don't use cursive anymore, but yeah, typing is a lot better than writing.

I have to admit, I kind of wonder what the point of that entire thing is. Copy a statement and sign it, sure - my professors make us do that for essays. Why in cursive?

Yeah, I took the SAT last summer and was really surprised at how I had almost completely forgotten how to write in cursive. Definitely one of the hardest parts of the test. Maybe it's secretly factored into your score, a plot to stop the decline in penmanship?

handwriting was always the ban of my existence ....mom used to scold me for how terrible it was---and this was back waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before computers, heck I learned to type on a MANUAL typewriter!! (and even then my typing looked bad since my left little finger has almost no power...so any 'a' 'z' or 'q' was barely there---was sooo happy when electric typewriters came out )
SOOO
my script is mostly printing which is almost legible--by me (sometimes ) and yeah cursive is for just my sig. I used to write my college notes in a short hand I developed on my own (like -ing was one character type stuff), still use a bit of it 20 years later.
Funny story is I have a pen pal in Finland who enjoys getting real snail mail--so she asks me to write letters to her, and yes I am the ONLY person left in the USA under the age of 50 who does NOT own a printer
so I have to hand write out the letters to her....after about a page, my hand starts to hurt,
egads...we are becoming whimps!
(now when I type that left little finger just goes numb...good thing a numb finger can still hit a key).
I am not looking forward to finishing my xmas cards....I dont have a label maker so I have to write out the addresses and sign them all individually. Good thing, a few of the people I used to send to are, uhm, no longer around so my list is getting shorter (isnt that supposed to happen when you are say a grandparent/age???)
sorry for the lengthy reply....must stop now as said finger is numb again

My penmanship has always been rather bad but at least my printing is legible. Now that my daughter is in kindergarten and son is starting pre-k next year I might want to start doing the writing exercises as well.

idk, i'm always writing down notes for class, but seeing as im always trying to write as fast as i can, i dont think it really helps improve my penmanship >_< always write in print while just writing a few letters in cursive. d's, a's, g's i've found that i also tend to make my x's curvy like they are when used as a variable in math equations >_< too much math >_<

I'm a scientist... so you can imagine how horrible my handwriting is... think doctor meets shorthand.
I find myself using the triangular dots (therefore) instead of the word therefore in notes to people. It's scary.
In addition... uh... I use a triangle in place of the word "change"... this is why I stick to typing!

My handwriting depends on my mood and level of tiredness, the better it is the more distinguishable my writing is, the letters are bigger and look much better, when I'm tired as hell my sentences look like barbed wire that was cut in multiple places.

So do I when I'm writing notes in class, and I'm a Literature major. It's really handy when you're trying to keep up with a professor with bullet-train speech.

It really depends on how you take in information and how you want to transfer it onto some paper or a computer. For instance, I have a lot of trouble in trying to listen to someone while I am also trying to concentrate to write or type. I found bullet points are the key with a summary of what your lecturer is saying as less information is usually better.
I really doubt the day will come of writing using pens and paper, will become obsolete in the near future. Writing will always has its place within our society as people learn how to read and even type by using writing as a visual learning exercise.

Writing will never be completely obsolete in my opinion. It's true that a lot of "old fashioned" skills seem to be degrading as newer multi-function gadgets are invented. But it seems to me that there'll always be purists. Look at music for example. To this day, there are people out there who love records. They insist that the analog sound has more nuance than digitally recorded music.
If anything, the younger generations are setting themselves up to be SoL if there was ever a large scale electrical brownout. Not to mention what will happen once the airwaves reach critical mass. How much wireless signal can the air carry before it's all just noise?
These aren't my 100% honest thoughts perse, but rather a slice of the post-apocalyptic pie in the freezer in my head.
Personally I think progress in the technological vein is great, but shouldn't come in lieu of evolution in telepathic areas! I mean, just because we might one day have partially mechanical bodies doesn't mean that we should be lumps of flesh without those enhancements. Things like letter-writing skills, etiquette, and genuine quality of emotion are key to being a decent human -- even if it is more tempting to just text it.
Last thought: I'm also one of those people who write in all caps, printed.

I don't know about hermetically-sealed ink cartridges but a dot matrix printer might suit your needs if you just want to print text.
Back when everyone still wrote my handwriting was poor so I'm glad I can type haha. Besides, it's a lot faster. Writing is for savages anyway.
